There are times in one’s life when they want to become a more interesting, more rounded, or just a better version of himself. Maybe during adolescence or the infamous mid-life crisis. We learn new languages, start eating healthier, or maybe just buy a nice house. There are a lot of things that people do to enrich their lives in different ways.

An instant way to cover many bases at once, is to start your own business. This will always give you something to think about, something to learn about and something to do. Want to get into better shape? Start a business. You will have less time to eat, and will want some time alone with no computer and no TV, and so you’ll find yourself going outside for an hour at a time to just walk, and think through a problem. You’ll be forced to learn things you never imagined you would need. Math skills to balance your books, and make financial decisions with lasting effects. You’ll have to do this many times a day, and learning some powerful software will help you even more. Now you’re great at math, and are getting really good with computers.

To take your computer knowledge to the next level, you’ll want to learn all the latest marketing tricks. Now you dive head first into the world of social media. So between sessions of updating QuickBooks, you’re sending tweets, and putting great deals up on Facebook. This is going well but you want a website. So you must learn some basic html, and now you’re also a computer programmer! Search engine optimization can’t be far behind.

Now that you’ve taken your business as far as it can go online, you’ll need to meet with people. Strategic partnerships, vendors, customers. To take your business to the next level you’ll have to get out in the world. Maybe you join a social club. Now your life is unrecognizable.

Case Study:

A single 30 something in Dallas TX had worked his way up the ladder in the Oil & Gas industry. Comfortable office, big salary and the accompanying security. His love of technology, and desire to entertain guests at parties led him to a high tech photo booth business. He was forced to do a massive amount of research on business, marketing, finance and even more technology. He knew that impressions were very important, so his wardrobe went from office schulbby to GQ chic. He joined a local social club where he met the movers and shakers of the city, and even starting attending event trade shows to meet the local competition.

After opening the photo booth rental business, he was always working parties. This of course leads to some amazing stories, some added social graces, and of course more friends and contacts then he ever would have been able to make sitting in his office. The networking he performed had numerous side effects, from new friends to different types of businesses which opened the door to some bartering opportunities.

Our photobooth business owner has a very small company, with very modest revenues but he has seen some major impact to his life. He now loves his work, and watching something he created grow, gets up early to get to work. He exercises regularly as he knows that a fit business owner reflects success and well being. He is well read, as he needs to stay on top of business, marketing and current trends. And he has a circle of people around him that also have very interesting lives.
